Tote the Weary Load, video with found footage from Gone With The Wind, 7:42, loop, 2016
Nearly every scene that takes place on or near a staircase was appropriated, sampled and remixed in this looped video. Gone with the Wind was chosen as source material because of its reputation for constructing the popular memory of the Civil War and stereotypes of the South in national and international imaginations. The staircases are mirrored and flipped, creating an Escher-like labyrinth, taking the spectator on a tour of Hollywood’s reimagining of the South. The characters of GWTW are frozen in an endless loop, forced to relive and repeat the eras of the antebellum South, Civil War, and Reconstruction; much like the current relationship of the South to its history.
